Statement of Intent

The products I have chosen to complete for my Year 2 Media coursework are a music video and a website to support this. The audience for both of these are for a youth 16-25 demographic and aims to entice viewers from this demographic and not to alienate any group, subculture or identity within it. After researching music videos and websites of a similar demographic, I aim to produce both that are reflective of authentic examples.

The band I created for the music video aims to show a diverse group through the use of varying social groups within the band, representing one member who is ideally to appear as 'popular' by very generalised social standards, wearing fashionable clothing. As well as featuring a member who is portrayed like a 'band geek', often wearing t-shirts of other bands and showing skill with instruments, as well as a 'nerdy' stereotype. This was to show that despite backgrounds and interests, music can be enjoyed and created regardless.

The shots used in the music video were conventional and generic, not veering away from the quintessential image of a standard pop song. As well as featuring elements of performance both in singing and playing instruments. The locations were to be scenic, and to represent the natural beauty of rural England. These would all be features to appeal to a popular, mainstream audience.

The website was made with similar intentions in mind, to achieve a realistic-looking band website. The contents of which achieve identical aims, by featuring branded content and interactive elements which further reinforce the image of the band in popular culture and its identity. It attempts not to stray far from the status-quo of band websites and band content in an effort to make it appear as traditionally commercialised and arguably impersonal as pop bands often are.

The lack of ethnic and racial diversity presented in my products is due largely to the lack of ethnic and racial diversity in the areas I live in and have access to, it is a predominantly 'white' county. Though this is not ideal in representing all people of marginalised groups and being able to include them, there is no effort made to exclude them, as well as also presenting the band with an authentic representation of members in the Norfolk and Suffolk areas.
