Planning for Music Video
For my music video, I aimed to find a somewhat generic or commercialised song that would be recognisable, but also I could fit majority of my vision into within 3 minutes.
The song I chose was Counting Stars by OneRepublic.
Once I had decided on the song, I initially planned a primarily narrative-based music video with elements of performance, combining elements of Ed Sheeran's Shape of You being exclusively narrative driven, and then elements of Taylor Swift's Shake It Off with a more lighthearted tone.
However, this became more unrealistic as I began planning a shot-list and spoke with the people who would become my band/actors. The song's original music video doesn't fully relate to the lyrics, and so I initially had planned elements for the music video to be centered around the lyrics, which I interpreted as someone dealing with the loss of a loved one, possibly through death or merely disconnection.
My plan was for a male singer/protagonist to deal with a significant other leaving him, and him dealing with all the associations he constantly makes from her absence.
After writing elements of this, it became more and more unrealistic, which is when I decided to change to a primarily performance-based music video.
After this decision, I made another shot-list, of scenic locations we had access to and were able to use for the performative elements of the music video. We shot lip-syncing content in these scenic locations during the 2019 summer.
I had made gradual progress on shot-lists and by the end had a fairly comprehensive idea of what locations and shots I had in mind, as to vary the shot types and distances, as well as not have any elements of editing be too jarring for any viewer.
It wasn't until early 2020 that I began shooting the instrumental performance elements, including the guitar and piano sections, as well as accumulating b-roll footage gradually.
